Elden Ring Tarnished Edition on Switch 2

Last updated: August 11, 2026 — Updated regularly as new information becomes available

Everything you want to know before buying and playing Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition on Nintendo Switch 2. No spoilers, just practical answers from one player to another.

Release & Purchase

When does Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition release?
August 28, 2026. That is the confirmed global launch date for the Switch 2 version. Digital buyers can preload ahead of time, and the physical Game-Key Card ships on the same day. In most regions the download unlocks at midnight local time, though your eShop may show the exact window for your time zone.
Is Tarnished Edition a Switch 2 exclusive?
Yes — it is a Switch 2 console-exclusive package. You can only play this particular edition on Nintendo Switch 2. The new content travels to other platforms through the separately sold Tarnished Pack add-on, but the Tarnished Edition bundle itself is Switch 2 only. If you want to play Elden Ring on a Nintendo handheld, this is the way.
How much does it cost?
$79.99 USD (North America) for the digital version. The physical edition carries the same price and ships as a Game-Key Card. Remember that this single price covers the base game plus Shadow of the Erdtree plus the new Tarnished content, so it lines up with other current-gen complete editions rather than a bare base game. What do I actually get in the box, and what is a Game-Key Card?
The physical package is a Game-Key Card, not a traditional game cartridge. The card itself is essentially a license key — it does not hold the full game on the cart. When you insert it you'll download roughly 64 GB to your console, and the card must stay inserted every time you play. Think of it as a reusable download ticket. The digital edition installs the same ~64 GB through the eShop and needs no cart at all.
Is there a pre-order, and what's the bonus?
Pre-orders are live through the Nintendo eShop and major retailers. Ordering ahead of August 28 locks in two exclusive gestures at no extra cost: "The Ring" and "Ring of Miquella." Good news if you miss the pre-order window — both gestures can also be earned later through co-op play, so you are never permanently locked out of them.
Can I preload the game before launch?
Yes. Preloading is typically enabled a few days before August 28. Because the download is about 64 GB, start it as early as you can and make sure you have enough free storage and a stable internet connection so you are ready to play the moment it unlocks.

Edition & Content

What exactly is Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition?
It is the complete Elden Ring experience rebuilt for Switch 2. You get the full base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion bundled together, plus Tarnished Edition-exclusive extras: two new starting classes, four new armor sets, and three Torrent cosmetic skins. The game was developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco. For context on its scale, the base game launched in 2022 and has sold over 30 million copies, while Shadow of the Erdtree arrived in 2024 and has passed 10 million sold. Tarnished Edition is the most complete way to experience all of it.
Does it include Shadow of the Erdtree?
Yes — in full. Every zone, boss, weapon, and quest from the expansion is included. On Switch 2 you do not buy Shadow of the Erdtree separately; it is part of the package from the start.
What are the two new classes?

Both are new starting options exclusive to the Tarnished content.

Heavy Knight (Level 10): VGR 14 / MND 8 / END 17 / STR 15 / DEX 11 / INT 7 / FTH 8 / ARC 9. Wears bulky steel armor and starts with an oversized scimitar. It has the highest Endurance of any starting class, giving you more stamina and the ability to wear heavier gear early — a classic "trade blows" tank opener.

Idus Knight (Level 7): VGR 10 / MND 12 / END 11 / STR 13 / DEX 15 / INT 8 / FTH 11 / ARC 6. Hails from the land of Idus. Lightweight and agile, with enough Faith and Mind to use early incantations and a summon right out of the gate. Perfect if you like a faster, magic-and-melee hybrid style.

What is the Tarnished Pack, and is it worth it for people who already own the game?
The Tarnished Pack is a separate paid add-on priced at $4.99 / €4.99, releasing the same day (August 28). It is built for players who already own Elden Ring + Shadow of the Erdtree on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, or PC. It contains the two new starting classes (Heavy Knight and Idus Knight), four new armor sets, and three Torrent cosmetic skins. If you already own the game on another platform and just want the new toys, five bucks is a cheap way to grab them. If you are buying on Switch 2, you do not need the Pack at all — that content is already in Tarnished Edition.
How long is the game?
A focused first playthrough on the main story runs roughly 80–120 hours. A completionist run — every boss, zone, and ending — pushes 150–200+ hours. Your own mileage depends on skill level, how much you explore, and whether you stop to read every item description (you should).
Does it have New Game Plus?
Yes. After the story ends you can begin New Game Plus, carrying your levels, gear, and most upgrades into a replay with re-leveled enemies — the standard Souls-style NG+ loop. It is also a great excuse to start a fresh character as the Heavy Knight or Idus Knight and try a completely different build.
Do I need to have played the original Elden Ring first?
No. Tarnished Edition is a complete standalone experience and, thanks to years of patches plus the added classes and content, it is arguably the best version to play first. Starting on an older platform would just mean playing a less complete copy.

Performance & Hardware

What framerate does it run at?
Honest answer: the official Elden Ring framerate on Switch 2 has not been announced. FromSoftware delayed the port into 2026 specifically for "performance adjustments," so the team is still tuning it. We won't have confirmed numbers until review copies and launch day. Don't trust any specific FPS figure you see quoted before then — real benchmarks land August 28, and we will update then.
What about resolution — handheld versus docked?
Elden Ring's exact resolution targets on Switch 2 aren't official yet either. What is confirmed is the hardware: the Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with 120Hz, HDR, and VRR, while the dock can output up to 4K at 60fps (or 1080p / 1440p at up to 120fps) to a TV. Expect the handheld screen to run at a lower internal resolution than the docked output; the final numbers are TBD at launch. The 120Hz VRR screen should keep things feeling smooth either way.
Does it support ray tracing?
The Switch 2's custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 chip supports ray tracing, but whether Elden Ring makes meaningful use of it is not confirmed. Given the game's scale and the clear priority on stable performance, don't bank on a prominent RT mode. Treat it as unknown until launch.
How big is the download, and do I need a microSD Express card?
The Game-Key Card download is about 64 GB. The Switch 2 uses 256 GB of built-in UFS storage and only accepts microSD Express cards for expansion (up to 2 TB) — older microSD and microSDXC cards are not supported in the faster slot. With one 64 GB game plus saves and any other titles, a microSD Express card is a smart purchase, though the internal 256 GB will hold several games on its own.
What are the Switch 2 specs that matter for this game?
The console has a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD (120Hz, HDR, VRR), a custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 with DLSS and ray tracing, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of UFS storage, microSD Express support up to 2 TB, and docked output up to 4K60 or 1080p / 1440p at 120fps. The system launched June 5, 2025 at $449.99. Those specs are what make a portable Elden Ring plausible in the first place.

Multiplayer & Saves

Is there cross-play?
No. Elden Ring has never had cross-play, and Tarnished Edition does not change that. Co-op summoning and PvP invasions are same-platform only — Switch 2 players connect with other Switch 2 players. You will not match with friends on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.
Can I transfer my save from PS5, Xbox, or PC?
No. There is no cross-save or cross-progression between platforms, and that includes the Switch 2. Your progress on Nintendo's system is independent. If you played Elden Ring elsewhere before, you start fresh on Switch 2 — which is fine, since Tarnished Edition adds new content you haven't touched yet.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online for cloud saves and co-op?
Co-op and invasions require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Cloud save backup also requires NSO — without it, your saves live only on the console's local storage. Single-player never needs NSO, so you can own the game and play the whole campaign without subscribing.
Can I play the game completely offline?
Yes. The entire campaign — base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, and all the new Tarnished content — is fully playable offline with no subscription. Online features (co-op, invasions, messages) are purely optional layers on top of the core single-player experience.
How does co-op work if there's no cross-play?
Just like every other version: you use the Summoning Pool or a Furled Finger to call in other players, and matchmaking is restricted to the Switch 2 player base. The new classes and the pre-order gestures can both be experienced through this same-platform co-op, so teaming up with a friend who also has a Switch 2 is the only route to cross-play-style help.

For Newcomers

Is Tarnished Edition a good first FromSoftware game?
It is arguably the best possible entry point. Elden Ring was designed to welcome players new to the studio's style, and Tarnished Edition is the most complete, polished form of it after years of updates and the added starting classes. The open world lets you simply walk away from a wall of a boss and come back stronger later — far more forgiving than the studio's earlier linear titles.
Is it really as hard as people say?
Challenging, yes, but fair. You die, you learn the attack pattern, you adjust, you try again. The difficulty comes from patience and observation more than twitch reflexes, and plenty of first-timers have finished it. Tools like Spirit Ashes (summonable allies), co-op summons, and leveling up Vigor make it very approachable once you settle in.
Is there an easy mode, and can I pause?
There is no official easy mode, but the game quietly hands you the tools to set your own difficulty: summon Spirit Ashes, overlevel an area, lean on magic, or call in co-op helpers. You can't pause mid-combat, but hitting the home button to sleep or close the software suspends everything, which works as a practical pause whenever you need to step away.
I'm coming from Zelda on Switch — will I be lost?
You'll recognize a lot: open-world exploration, map markers, and horseback travel (that's Torrent). The combat is more deliberate and unforgiving than Zelda, but the "go somewhere else and come back later, stronger" philosophy will feel very familiar. Give it a few hours and the rhythm clicks.
Which new class should a beginner pick?
If you want to absorb mistakes and trade hits, the Heavy Knight is the safer opener thanks to its high Endurance and heavy armor. If you prefer a quicker, more flexible start that can already dabble in incantations and summons, the Idus Knight is a friendly hybrid. Neither is a trap — Elden Ring lets you respec later, so your starting class is just a first step.
